About My Blog

I’m a lover of languages. English is my native language but I’m also approaching fluency in Japanese. I lived in Japan for almost 5.5 years total – 10 weeks in Tokyo, 3 years in Fukushima Prefecture, 2 years in Gifu Prefecture, 6 weeks in Shizuoka Prefecture.

I once read more avidly than I do today. This is probably because I juggle more things in my life now. I still love books very much, and I read when possible. My favorites tend to be young adult or juvenile age level fantasy and science fiction. I also enjoy horror. I especially love fairy tales of all kinds. I watch loads of anime and read manga on occasion. I don’t watch a lot of other television.

Some of my favorite authors are Richard Brautigan, Stephen King, William Sleator, and Ray Bradbury.

My favorite books, in no particular order: House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery, Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, The Thief of Always by Clive Barker.

My favorite book series, in no particular order: Harry Potter series, Chronicles of Narnia, The Minds Series (by Matas and Nodelman), Enchanted Forest Chronicles.

Favorite manga, in no particular order: Fullmetal Alchemist, Karin (Chibi Vampire), Rosario + Vampire (seasons 1 & 2), Ancient Magus’ Bride, Yona of the Dawn, Rust Blaster, Mairimashita Iruma-kun, Snow White with Red Hair.

Favorite anime, in no particular order: Fullmetal Alchemist, Karin (Chibi Vampire), Yona of the Dawn, The World is Still Beautiful, My Neighbor Totoro, Patema Inverted, Stein’s Gate, Kaze no Stigma, Howl’s Moving Castle.

My favorite movies are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Pleasantville.

If I were a fictional character, I would be Luna Lovegood. I am pretty sure she is my spirit animal or my brain twin or some similar thing.

If my opinions differ from yours, then let me apologize in advance. I am going to say what I think, and let you agree or disagree as you will.

Regardless of the medium, a story is a story. I want to focus on critical thinking about the characters and plots of each story. I want to do this kind of critical thinking so that I can carry that over into my own writing and learn how to evaluate my own characters, plots, etc.

My blog’s name is 星女 which means “stargirl” in Japanese. I very much liked the book called Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, and someone I dated years ago called me that for a time. I resemble Stargirl in that I am an eccentric person with a different way of looking at the world.
